Weather Report. Climate Change and Visual Arts.
From 13 July to 16 September 2007, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the exhibition Weather Report. Climate Change and Visual Arts, a project that suggests and analysis of climate change through 18 international artists, 16 of which have developed specific new production projects for the occasion.

From 13 July to 16 September 2007, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the exhibition Weather Report. Climate Change and Visual Arts, a project that suggests and analysis of climate change through 18 international artists, 16 of which have developed specific new production projects for the occasion.
The exhibition intentionally declines the notions of ‘spectacularity’ and superficiality that dominate contemporary art at the beginning of the 21st C, and suggests a work protocol in which conducting regulations have been established to reduce to a minimum the transportation of works of art, producing, on the one hand, local installations, and on the other choosing digital support for the 13 artists that have made a photographic contribution.
Each one of these 13 artists has provided a photographic project of 24 new images. The images will be exhibited as 6×4 up to 30x45cm grids, and at the same time, they will be displayed by a digital slide projector. This interaction between the printed and the projected image establishes a connexion between low and high technology.
The exhibition questions, in addition, the way in which museums display and produce contemporary art, suggesting viable alternatives in the execution of projects for their coherent development.
The photographic contributions draw up an authentic global analysis, and come from South Africa, Vietnam, Japan, Argentina, United Kingdom, United States of America, Germany, Iceland and Spain, weaving, in the process, multiple micro communities.
For the development of the project we counted with the collaboration of Manuel Vázquez Abeledos scientific-informative guidance, from the Instituto Astrofísico de Canarias (Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands), whose contribution will be integrated in the expositive itinerary via a didactic installation.
Furthermore, we will count with Janek Schaefer’s audible installations ‘It would take 4 words to sustain our current population pollution by the end of the century’, and with Thomas Köner’s piece ‘Station Eismitte’, where the artist has deconstructed the sound of the thawing of glaciers. Another of the suggested interventions will be that of Chinese artist Gu Dexin who will open up the skin of the building of the museum and ‘connect’ it to the exterior. Terence Koh, from Canada, will carry out his first intervention in Spain after the success of his last show in Zurich’s Kunsthalle.
The project includes a photographic publication that will gather the works of Teresa Arozena, Dan Holdsworth, Thomas Köner, Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Laurel Nakadate, Tomás Saraceno, Rei Sato, Carlos A. Schwartz, Hrafnkell Sigurdsson, Jane Simpson, Joern Vanhoefen and Catherine Yass. The images are collected in the same size as the prints for the exhibition (30×45) and include a contribution from the curator. White non-chlorine paper will be used for the publication.
CAAM will compensate CO2 emissions originated due to the transportation and trips organized for the exhibition. For this pioneering innovative alternative in the world of art at international level, we will count with the assistance of the company Climate Care to carry out environmental actions that compensate these gas emissions. Following this initiative, the exhibition Weather Report. Climate Change and Visual Arts, turns into a focal activism point, going beyond the artistic reflection forum and developing deeper conections with the multidisciplinary nature of the project.
